Non-Violent Communication

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

Marshal Rosenberg created The Center for Non-Violent Communication (CNVC,) a global organization that supports the learning and sharing of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) that helps people peacefully and effectively resolve conflicts in personal, organizational, and political settings.

CNVC has information and resources, including training, conflict resolution, projects and organizational consulting services for non-violent communication.

“With Nonviolent Communication (NVC) we learn to hear our own deeper needs and those of others. Through its emphasis on deep listening—to ourselves as well as others—NVC helps us discover the depth of our own compassion. This language reveals the awareness that all human beings are only trying to honor universal values and needs, every minute, every day.”

Principles of Non-Violent Communication

There are four components of the NVC model

  1. Observe what is happening

  2. State how we feel when we observe this phenomenon

  3. Say what our needs are in relation to how we feel regarding what we observe

  4. Clearly state what we want in the situation

“All that has been integrated into NVC has been known for centuries about consciousness, language, communication skills, and use of power that enable us to maintain a perspective of empathy for ourselves and others, even under trying conditions." ~ Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD
